Our Story
Transforming mental healthcare
Beyond Binary began as an idea to re-imagine the way we give and receive care.
We wanted to address issues in the mental health field that affect both clients and providers. Many people want care, and many providers want to help, but wellness spaces are not always suited for healing. In Kentucky alone, over 1 in 6 adults struggle to get care. That number rises to 1 in 4 in our coalfield Appalachian counties. These numbers highlight an industry overrun with access barriers.
The mental health industry is, after all, still an industry.
But things can change. At Beyond Binary, we aren’t afraid to face these grand challenges. We are passionate about helping folks regain functioning in their lives. We want to ask the hard questions that will lead us to new insights for our work.

Our Mission
Beyond Binary is devoted to the accessibility of quality mental health care services for marginalized Kentuckians.
As a justice-centered practice, our priority is serving folks whose identities and lived experiences fall outside the mainstream.
LGBTQ+ folks, BIPOC folks, rural folks, Muslim folks, erotically marginalized folks, sex workers, organizers, artists...

Our values
Right to care
We believe everyone has a right to quality mental healthcare. We are always looking for ways to make our services more accessible, including sliding scale sessions, equity appointments, and expanding the number of insurance plans we accept.
Functional behavioral health
We believe everyone deserves to be seen as a whole person. This includes prioritizing restorative healthcare practices as a “first resort.” We’ll take a look at the whole picture and help form treatment goals before we diagnose or assign a label.
Folks always have a right to decide which services and approaches best fit their needs and means. We’re here to help provide the service that’s best for you.
Transparency
Investment
We believe in transparency for clients, staff, and the greater public. You’ll know upfront how much our services cost and where that money goes. We also promise to be as clear as possible about the values and beliefs that drive our work. If anything about our company changes, especially if it will impact your care, we’ll let you know as soon as possible. We’ll also let you know if we make a mistake along the way.
We believe in keeping our money and practice anchored in the communities we serve. Our first choice is to work with local + regional vendors, contractors, and artists when we need additional support. Our executive team chooses refurbished technology and actively engage in zero waste practices. We encourage all team members to choose waste reduction practices as often as possible.
Privacy
We believe in top tier privacy for clients, staff, and the greater public.
We actively use physical and digital risk mitigation strategies to ensure our community stays as safe as possible. We’ve built a digital ecosystem that does not compromise on privacy or service.
We do not use any Google services for sensitive information, and we never will.
